ABOUT

Joshua Bashford, born in 1989 of Pakeha and Samoan descent, earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with honors from the University of Canterbury in 2012. He currently resides and works near Little River, drawing inspiration from the region for many of the motifs in his artwork, including the river, roads, fish, people, and hawks.

Bashford was mentored by the noted NZ-Pacific artist Fatu Feu’u, whom he met when Feu’u was Artist in Residence at the Macmillan Brown Centre for Pacific Studies in 2011. They have since exhibited together in Canterbury, Apia (Samoa) as part of the Return to Hawaiiki visiting artists program, and in 2013 at The Diversion Gallery in Picton. Bashford's work often employs printmaking techniques such as woodcuts, sometimes on a large scale, although he also produces single monoprints on canvas of these complex works.

His work has been exhibited in Nelson, Christchurch, Blenheim, Auckland, Melbourne, and Samoa, and is included in numerous private collections. Bashford is noted for establishing a very original and distinctive style, making him a young artist to watch in the future.
